The Winter 2021 Virtual Housing Industry Summit Series will convene a diverse group of community stakeholders on a bi-weekly basis to learn about the Southern Tier’s most pressing housing issues.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Municipal leaders, economic developers, and private developers. Organized by the Southern Tier 8 Regional Board and County Planning Departments.  

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT

The 2021-2022 Virtual Housing Summit Series will convene a diverse group of community stakeholders for 6 sessions on a bi-weekly basis to learn about the Southern Tier's most pressing housing issues. The sessions will analyze interdisciplinary challenges, promote collaborative best practices, and encourage the development of equitable and sustainable solutions.

  • Rural America’s Hidden Housing Crisis

    November 18, 2021
    SESSION 1 : November 18, 2021 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

    Session will focus on rural housing challenges in the Southern Tier and Upstate NY, the intersection of housing with other community issues, and housing challenges in urban and rural contexts.

    • Mayor Hal McCabe – Executive Director of the NY State Legislative Commission on Rural Resources and Mayor of the Village of Homer
    • Shelly Johnson-Bennett – Director of Planning for Delaware County

  • Values-Based Neighborhood Design and Development

    December 2 , 2021
    SESSION 2 : December 2 , 2021 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

    Session will focus on homelessness, direct/exclusionary displacement, and equitable development.

  • Aligning Capital and Generating Impact

    December 16 , 2021
    SESSION 3 : December 16 , 2021 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

    Session will focus on financing housing projects, public grant opportunities and federal housing priorities, place-based development programs, and more.   

    Speakers:

    • James Carras – Lecturer in Public Policy, Harvard Kennedy School of Government
    • Lisa Pugliese – Buffalo Field Office Director, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
    • Megan McDonald – Deputy Commissioner, Tompkins County Department of Planning and Sustainability

  • Climate Resilience and Sustainable Communities

    January 13 , 2022
    SESSION 4 : January 13 , 2022 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

    Speakers:

    • Nick Goldsmith – Sustainability Planner, Town of Ithaca
    • Paul Hoole – Mitigation Planner, Federal Emergency Management Agency

    Moderator: Trisha Jesset – Director of Planning, Cortland County

    Topic areas: flood risk management, municipal energy code supplements, and smart growth strategies.

  • Deconstructing Stigma: Community Opposition to Affordable, Mixed-Income, and Public Housing

    Responses to neighborhood opposition, inclusionary housing programs, and equitable community development.
